Ed VOS :? Sikkim Global Cinema Fest
February 28 th ?to March 1 st ?2020 would go down as a day where Sikkim would become the 1 st ?North East state to hold such a grand film festival. Chief Secretary Shri SC Gupta chaired a meeting on the 10 th of February 2020 at the Tashiling Secretariat with regard to the upcoming global cinema festival.
The newly formed Sikkim Film co operative society will be collaborating with the film federation of India and the government of Sikkim to create an atmosphere of international film festival in the state with its objective as to promote Sikkim as a film location and shooting destination.
Chief Secretary states it as a step towards creating a still development ecosystem in the field of filmmaking in the state that offers a great opportunity for the people of Sikkim to experience cinema with elevated experience.
Global Cinema Festival is an initiative of film federation of India(FFI) to take popular cinema to small cities where there aren?t enough movie theaters and where no film festivals of national or international ?standing has gone before.
The FFI president also extended gratitude to the state government and commended its permissive approach towards new ideas for the development of the state and its people.
The film festival may be lauded as a kind of advertisement for tourism as there will be many visitors to the state; it will generate revenue to the national film industries and may provide network opportunities for the likeminded individuals and our film makers.
On the other hand the razzmatazz of the global cinema fest may have not much to offer. With nothing ?known regarding the government?s spending we must ask the following questions. Is this the panacea to the questions put forward by the authorities regarding the debts of every Sikkimese? ?are the film makers holding COI the actual beneficiaries or is it going to benefit the non sikkimese? Should the top level government servants and politicians be engaged in organizing film festivals?
What is lacking is not an experience of cinema with elevated experience but various welfare measures, focus should be laid on training/prepping the amateur filmmakers first and then gear up for a large scale film festival, our resources should be focused in improving our skills in exports of our organic farm products and the products of our own self help groups. With tourism already booming in our state the veil that the film fest will promote tourism must also be lifted. The recent water crisis in Shimla due to excessive tourism can be taken as a lesson from another Himalayan state, with the main goal of sustainable development.
However, being optimistic is through the film festival the government engages in cultural exchanges of various youths, formulates policies for capacity building for the budding film makers and provide opportunities for honoring the talents of our actors. ?If through the film fest many delinquent youths could be inspired and look at film making as a career option, if through this we promote our indigenous language and culture then this move of the organizes must be lauded.
