Have we killed Humanity ?
Humanity is a robust feeling of love and compassion for everyone be they family, friends, strangers or even enemies, irrespective of religion, caste and creed, irrespective of nationality. Matters like faith, caste, creed, color and nationality often divide people and do not unite them, the way they are practiced and lived, and they have become enemies of humanity.
Today in the video by the Siliguri Today what we saw was a cruel act of inhumanity where no person came to help an ailing lady who was chocking and gasping for air and probably bitten by a dog, even though there were a lot of pedestrians, passersby in rickshaws and autos, who just may have looked at her condition but did nothing to help her out, luckily some good Samaritans Phillip (Swedish) and Sarah (Italian) came to her rescue(kudos to them) , even then the onlookers or GPRF (railway police) didn?t pay much heed to the situation, only then they called for help from Namaste Foundation (NGO) but before they could reach and take her to the hospital she had already died.
While the incident once again rises questions about public apathy the reason many bystanders fail to intervene is because a number of people, may be scared about what if they get into some legal confusion or maybe they do empathies but they don?t unnecessarily want to be a subject to punishment for a particular offense or wrongdoing, which is wrong in so many levels.
Humanity is benevolence it?s living a noble and caring life, to quote the bible ?In everything, then, do to others as you would have them do to you? and, as Jesus had said, ?Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.? ?Or The Bhagavad Gita (12.13) which states that compassion for all living beings is the first among the defining qualities of devotees. This sums up what humanity is, in a nutshell.
Had she been helped by any passerby and taken medical help, one life would have been saved today. Why do we pray to god everyday if we have no compassion and empathy for others in reality, do we always pray for our own selfish needs? Why do we advertise our country as ?Incredible India? where people who come to visit our ever so ?incredible? country have to help an ailing lady on the street? ?In an ideal world she should have been saved and breathing right now, but where is the beauty in living in a world composed, governed and preserved by humans that lack a sense of humanity?
